Meeting with Monsters- book

Icelandic folklore heritage contains countless stories about strange animals and strange creatures. These creatures scared the countrymen in the chest in previous centuries, but there has been almost silence about them lately, most of them anyway.

The book recounts the main legends and stories about these sex animals and, among other things, relies on a number of oral sources. The creatures and their characteristics are detailed and clearly explained in the text, and the places where they appear are shown on a map. Finally, unique photos shed new light on this remarkable part of the nation’s history.

Artist Jón Baldur Hlíðberg has long been nationally known for his zoological pictures, which have graced scholarly publications and various educational materials in recent years. Here he breaks out on a new level. Sigurður Ægisson is an ethnologist and a theologian by training and has throughout the years written equally on natural history, ethnology and theology. Íslenskar kynjaskepnur is the third collaborative project between the two companies, but previously they have jointly published Ísfygla: íslenskir fuglar = aves islandicæ and Íslenskir hvalir past and present.
